Canadian Adaptation of PACE

PACE Canada, was developed by the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute in collaboration with the U.S Project PACE team and the Active Living Coalition for Older Adults.
Financial support for this initiative was provided by Health Canada.

PACE Canada differs from the US version of PACE in that it has been adapted specifically for the Canadian cultural milieu and health care context, and is available in both English and French. In addition, and unlike the US version, it has been extended to be inclusive of older adults, who are at significantly higher risk of sedentary living and poor eating habits.

The development of PACE Canada involved a comprehensive, multi-level review process which included Canadian policy makers, leading research scientists, health care providers, physicians and office staff, and key national organizations working in the area of health, physical activity, nutrition and aging:

among many others.

PACE Canada was also pilot tested with Canadian family physicians, office staff and patients at two clinical practice sites. This work clearly demonstrated that PACE Canada was acceptable and relevant to Canadian providers and their staff alike, who strongly supported the value and purpose of the program. As well, participating patients found the PACE Canada procedures to be helpful and highly supportive of their efforts to lead healthier, more active lives.

Additional research is currently underway to assess the longer term impact and efficacy of PACE Canada on patient physical and eating behaviours. Regular updates on the progress of this work will be posted in the PACE Canada Newsbriefs section of this site.
